To safely service locomotives as requested by our customer(s) in strict adherence to standard operating procedures.  


  • Makes a commitment to work without an occurrence; no spills, no injuries and no property damage.
  • Performs locomotive service tasks in accordance with the Locomotive Servicing Procedures.
  • Locomotive Service may include:
    • Inspecting and replacing worn brake shoes.
    • Checking, and if necessary, adding lube oil, cooling water and crank case oil to the locomotive.
    • Check, and if necessary, adding tractionsand to the locomotive sand hoppers.
    • Cleaning the locomotive cab, removing trash, restocking crew supplies and toilet evacuation.
  • Readily available to answer customer dispatches and responds in a timely manner.
  • Provides complete and correct fuel accounting utilizing on-board computer terminal.  Completes other associated paperwork in a neat and legible manner and processes the paperwork in the prescribed manner within established timelines.
  • Wears all requires Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Conducts comprehensive pre and post shift vehicle and equipment inspections.
  • Reports incidents (operational and/or safety related), as instructed, in a timely manner.
  • Uses Blue Flag worker protection when required and follows all customer safety rules and regulations at all times.
  • Controls, contains and reports any spill according to the established Occurrence Reporting procedures.
  • Maintains an accurate record of Hours of Service logs or time sheets and submits the records in a timely manner.
  • Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles and equipment as able and qualified.
  • Commits to following Savage’s standards of professionalism and cleanliness.
  • Commits to be a reliable, safe, positive team member and demonstrates this commitment with proper attendance communication and conduct.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by regional management or site leaders


  • Must have a Class A or B CDL with HazMats and Tanker endorsements.
  • Must be able to clear all background checks required by the Company, customer and government.
  • Individuals are responsible for maintaining all required licenses and certifications in a current and valid status at all times.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand English.
  • Must be reliable and dependable.
  • Must know when to ask for help.
  • Moderate computer skills are required.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Should be willing to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.  Shifts may rotate.
  • This position is required to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to climb steps and ladders.
  • Cannot have a fear of heights, will have to get on the top of trailers and equipment as necessary.



  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 6+ months heavy equipment/diesel mechanic experience


Physical Requirements:

  • Able to consistently bend, stoop, kneel and climb on and off elevated surfaces
  • Willing to receive general safety training
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Willing to work with liquid non-hazardous & dry bulk materials
  • Can carry at least fifty (50) pounds
  • May have to walk long distances
