rotating shift to include days, nights, weekends, holidays, etc. 24/7 operation with 48/36 pay period, so overtime is built in

The Switchman’s primary responsibility is to safely and timely switch rail cars within the customer’s facility in Westlake, LA.  It is expected that the Switchman will have the ability to understand and follow operating procedures and policies.  The Railroad switchman will be expected to deliver “worry-free service” to our customer. 


  • Understands the importance of good communication with the customer and other Savage team members
  • A desire to learn the skills necessary to do the job safely and in a way that adds value to the customers operation and exceed their expectations
  • The rail switchman must be able to work alone and also in groups up to 3 pershift to safely spot railcars at requested locations and build outbound trains
  • Visually inspect railcars and apply/release handbrakes through their shift



  • Team members may have the opportunity to participate in Safety training programs which may require travel
  • Can read, write, and understand English
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate prdictable, reliable and timely attendance
  • Willing to wear required PPE
  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times
  • Works safely at all times
  • Pass drug / alcohol test / criminal background check
  • Must have valid drivers license and high school dibploma/GED



  • Minimum of 5 years experience in rail switching required
  • Professional (concerned about safety and quality of job performance)
  • Cooperative (able to follow directions and change schedule)
  • Chemical plant or Refinery background preferred, but not required


Physical Requirements:

  • Rail switch person will work outdoors every day and as a result will be exposed to the elements
  • Rail switch person must be physically able to do the following:
    • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
    • Operate rail car hand brakes
    • Operate rail switches
  • Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
  • Should also have the ability to use basic hand tools
