Drive Safety, Health and Environment (SH&E) strategy and performance for the Company.  Ensures regulatory compliance across operations.  Lead efforts to achieve goal of an occurrence free workplace.


  • Coach and mentor SH&E Team Members throughout the Company
  • Develop and use proactive processes, systems, tools and metrics to drive SH&E continuous improvement and optimize performance to achieve zero occurrences
  • Participate in SH&E efforts that make safety and health a competitive differentiation in Business Development
  • Determine SH&E resource needs and make recommendations to VP SH&E
  • Develop, review, and publish safety, health and environment policies and procedures
  • Oversee reporting and record keeping requirements for internal and external safety, health and environment metrics
  • Work closely with the group and business units to ensure work activities are performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible manner in compliance with applicable Savage policies, regulatory obligations and customer requirements
  • Facilitate occurrence investigation, root cause analysis, implementation and closure of corrective actions
  • Seek out and share best safety, health and environment practices within and across the organization
  • Work closely with other SH&E Professionals, Group and Business Unit Leaders and Operation Mangers implementing all safety, health and environment related portions of the Savage S7 System and audits
  • Assist with return-to-work and temporary-transitional-assignment cases collaborating with Group SH&E Directors and Risk Team on progress of each case
  • Work closely with SH&E Team Members to ensure any occurrences are classified appropriately
  • Assist Group, Business Units and Operations with occurrence prevention efforts
  • Assist Group and Business Units with successful execution of Lead Safety Specialist and Safety Specialist programs
  • Develop curriculum, content, and resources for online safety, health and environment training
  • Assist operations with execution of training plans to ensure customer, company and regulatory compliance
  • Act as a resource to the operations in efforts to evaluate, select, and deploy personal protective equipment, engineering or administrative control of hazards
  • Interface with regulatory agencies (primarily DOT, OSHA, MSHA, and EPA)
  • Assist in start-up / integration of new business, products, and processes using S7 Launch
  • Willing to be reached and able to assist 24/7
  • Participate as a member of the Safety Advisory Group
  • Liaison between the Service Support Center, Group SH&E Directors, and operations
  • Act as subject matter expert on safety, health and environment matters and Savage reporting
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Broad knowledge and understanding of safety, health and environment, including a mix of OSHA, MSHA, EPA, DOT and FRA
  • Hands-on, in-field involvement with SH&E Managers and Operations Team Members
  • Ability to analyze situations, data and make sound decisions
  • Training experience preferred
  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite)
  • Excellent communication skills: written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented and self-starter

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering or related field preferred
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred or ability to achieve CSP designation within six months of start
  • 7+ years’ experience in a safety and health leadership role or equivalent


Physical Requirements:

  • Up to 50% travel required – (At times more based on business needs)
  • Ability to go where work is taking place (i.e. uneven surfaces, climb ladders, indoors, outdoors, changing weather conditions)
  • Willing to always wear appropriate PPE when needed and set the example
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. occasionally
