The Barge Handler's primary responsibility will be to safely and efficiently load barges by inspecting them for excess water, trash, significant damage and unsafe conditions.  


  • Must have the ability to learn and understand safe work practices on the river and in the refinery
  • Must show an understanding of the seriousness of the dangers involved in the area of operation
  • Must display a sense of urgency
  • Must be able to read a draft tape
  • Must be able to physically handle barge lines
  • Must be able to read, write and understand English
  • Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions
  • Must be willing to help with maintenance, clean-up, and anything else that requires attention, as directed by the Operation Manager


  • Candidate must have a Current and Valid TWIC at the time of applying
  • Must be able to pass DISA drug screen (hair, urinalysis and breathalyzer)
  • Barge/river experience preferred
  • Must have a flexible work schedule
  • Barge handlers should be reliable, professional and have the ability to “read the river”
  • Willingness to learn new skills is required
  • Being self directed and motivated to exceed expectations is vital
  • They must conduct themselves with honesty and integrity
  • Must have a strong commitment to safety
  • Must understand the importance of customer service
  • Must be a solid team player
  • Must be willing to do any task(s) that require(s) attention
  • Must follow all rules and procedures as outlined by Valero and Savage



  • High school diploma/GED

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass an extensive pre employment physical
  • Must be able to climb on and off barges, handle heavy (~50 lbs), wet ropes
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, stoop and crawl
  • Must not have a fear of heights
  • Must be able to work in any weather including heat, cold, rain, etc
