Overview

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Engineer is to oversee the operation of propulsion, power generation systems and stands an engineering watch when assigned as a watchstander.

Responsibilities

  • The 2nd and 3rd Assistant Engineer oversees the operation of propulsion, power generation systems and stands an engineering watch when assigned as a watchstander.
  • The Assistant Engineer reports directly to the 1AE and implements SMS requirements and additional duties as assigned.
  • The Assistant Engineers are responsible for implementing SMM policy and procedural requirements onboard as relating to the position. The Assistant Engineer also assists the Chief Engineer with the inspection, testing and maintenance of engine machinery and systems.
  • The Assistant Engineer may be referred to as the Engine Watch Officer within various procedures.

Qualifications

  • USCG Licensed Unlimited Horsepower
  • Familiarity with Wartsila Medium Speed Diesel engines
  • Tankerman Engineer endorsement
  • All Required STCW endorsements for a chemical tanker capable of foreign voyages
  • Must have a valid TWIC card and Passport
  • Other certificates and endorsements as deemed required for the operation and by Savage Marine
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Proven and effective manager and leader

Education/Experience: 

  • High School diploma
  • Maritime Academy graduate preferred
  • ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds

Must have current USCG medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
