Overview

The Chief Engineer has full technical authority over vessel machinery and is directly responsible for all occurring in the Engine Department, which may affect the interest of the Company, unless otherwise relieved in writing of such authority and responsibility by the Captain.  They will oversee the other engine department personnel. This responsibility includes operation, maintenance and repair of vessel machinery in accordance with Class rules.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safe, effective, environmentally conscious, and reliable operations of the vessel’s engine and other mechanical systems
  • Manage all engine department personnel
  • Adherence to the equipment preventative maintenance schedule
  • Ability to receive, respond, carry-out, and report to vessel’s Master in all duties
  • The Chief Engineer is responsible for safe and alert watches of the engine room and machinery spaces.
  • The Chief Engineer is responsible for and will be the primary PIC for fuel oil transfers that occur. He shall maintain accurate and timely records of transfers in the Oil Record Book.
  • The Chief Engineer will supervise the Engine department on board the vessel and be responsible for the maintenance and operation of machinery
  • The Chief Engineer is to notify the Captain of any cases affecting the machinery of the vessel, as well as the safety and security of the Engine Room. He shall immediately notify the Captain of any environmental concerns arising from vessel operations.
  • The Chief Engineer is responsible for following all regulations and procedures under which the vessel trades, including but not limited to: Flag State, Class, Port State, the Company HSSEQ Management System
  • The Chief Engineer shall liaise with the Marine Superintendent/Port Engineer via the Captain concerning repairs, fueling and maintenance.
  • The Chief Engineer shall remain on board the vessel in port during normal working hours as specified by the Captain

Qualifications

  • USCG Licensed Chief Engineer Unlimited Horsepower
  • Tankerman Engineer endorsement
  • All Required STCW endorsements for an ATB
  • Must have a valid TWIC card and Passport
  • Other certificates and endorsements as deemed required for the operation and by Savage Marine
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Proven and effective manager and leader

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma
  • Five years experience as Chief preferred
  • ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds

Must have current USCG medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
