The primary responsibility of the Mechanic is to service and maintain equipment such as tractor and trailer units, tri-axle dump trucks and  also, maintain off road equipment such as skid steer loader.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Safely perform routine services
  • Order and maintain inventories
  • Diagnose problems on tri-axle dump trucks and maintain off-road equipment such as skid steer loader.  This equipment must be maintained to a standard that it is safe nd dependable to operate
  • Maintain appropriate record keeping
  • Coordinate and schedule services including:
    • Change / adjust brakes
    • Change / mount tires
    • Grease the CMVs
    • Replace / repair lights
    • Check / fill gear boxes
    • Change oil and filters
    • Check / change wheel bearings
    • Change springs
    • Clutch adjustment / replacement
    • Understand / repair air brake system
    • Understand / repair steering components
    • Steam-clean tractor / trailer units
  • General clean-up and maintenance duties to include but are not limited to painting, miscellaneous general labor, emptying trash, cleaning shop and shop vehicles, operatign skid steer, tractor trailer and dump trucks in the yard, using a pressure washer, etc. 
  • Read and understand oil sample results to troubleshoot problems
  • Perform maintenance duties in the shop, yard, field and roadside on service calls
  • Maintain the fleet to meet Savage and DOT standards
  • Perform minor cleaning to the equipment and facilities keeping them in a safe condition
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary by the Maintenance Supervisor or Operations Manager / Supervisor

Qualifications

  • Familiar with computers and have an understanding of maintenance systems, truck, engine and transmission diagnostics software a plus
  • Must be familiar with record-keeping as it pertains to maintenance of DOT regulations
  • Must have a sufficient amount of personal tools to effectively maintain equipment
  • Must have mechanical ability and a willingness to learn
  • Must comply with all safety standards and company policies
  • Welding steel and aluminum;  using a cutting torch and plasma a plus
  • Need to understand the importance of scheduling equipment for servicing
  • Must have experience working on equipment that operate in harsh environments and to work with chemicals
  • Must understand and have experience working with air brakes and hydraulics
  • Must have a good working knowledge of diesel engines , diagnosing, repair and maintenance of the systems
  • Must understand their own limitations and know when to ask for help
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and physical examination
  • Be self-motivated, hard worker, and maintain a good attendance record
  • in some cases, be able to run mobile equipment and operate a tractor/trailer
  • Ability to change a flat tire

 

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb a ladder and use a safety harness
  • Ability to climb into and out of cab
  • Ability to lift 50lbs. or more daily
  • Ability to drive in winter conditions
  • Ability to be on work sites where products are produced
  • Must be able to climb, crawl, carry and position body in such a way that will enable you to perform your required duties
