The primary responsibility of the Port Engineer will be to maintain or repair ocean going equipment, including tugs and barges. The Port Engineer will also be directly responsible for dockside problem-solving and major shipyard repairs, scheduled and unscheduled. This position is located in Tampa, FL. 


  • Assist with maintaining and ensuring the quality control of the ship’s Preventive Maintenance System
  • Coordinate the organization and maintenance of the vessel drawings and documents.
  • Prepare specifications for shipyards and major repairs and vessel construction activities
  • Research, specify, purchase and coordinate delivery of vessel equipment, supplies, parts and services
  • Generate reports after major repairs, dry dockings and equipment surveys
  • Inspects machinery, equipment, or spaces outlined in work request, draws up job specifications, and obtains bids from contractors or shipyards to perform repairs
  • Investigate machinery failures to determine cause, and advises ship's officers in methods of operation to prevent reoccurrence
  • Manage new vessel construction projects
    • Coordinate and facilitate shipyard engineering and architectural questions and concerns
    • Negotiate and expedite change orders (cost control)
    • Quality control of ship building process ensure adherence to general specifications are achieved: Steel type/thickness, Equipment specifications/placement/functionality, Operating systems are in compliance, Welding & fabrication quality, Paint and coatings
    • Construction Progress Reporting
    • Organize and manage vessel commissioning, delivery, and acceptance to satisfaction of all stakeholders
  • Oversee Class and/or USCG inspection evaluation for re-certification and all repairs associated with re-certification of equipment
  • Resolve problems with vessel equipment
  • Survey and oversee majors repairs and maintenance tasks both planned and unplanned
  • Track vessel certificates and schedule surveys and inspections with Class and USCG
  • Work closely with vendors, management and customers on a daily basis
  • Handle special duty assignments requested by department management


  • Good interpersonal, communication and customer relations skills
  • Experience with Unlimited Oceans classified equipment
  • Expert knowledge of vessel repair, remedial and scheduled shipyard
  • Ability to solve problems dockside working directly with M&R office staff
  • Good organizational skills and ability to adapt to changing schedules
  • Ability to make decisions and to exercise good judgement
  • Ability to climb, crawl, pull, push, lift and carry heavy items
  • Ability to use and operate field truck, field tools, SCBA, ultrasonic tester, safety equipment and 10-key. Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record
  • Knowledge and use of computer software including Microsoft Office package and Nautical Systems


  • 4-year Engineering Degree
  • 5+ years’ experience in the Offshore and liquid cargo handling industry

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to satisfy all USCG Chemical Drug Testing Programs for Vessel personnel
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders
