Overview

The Ordinary Seaman is to assist with the operation of deck and cargo machinery and perform the duties of helmsman, lookout when at sea, and duties relating to navigational watchkeeping assigned by the OICNW. When transferring cargo, the Ordinary Seaman assists the Person-in-Charge (PIC) with standing a cargo watch. The Ordinary Seaman reports directly to the Chief Mate for cargo, maintenance, and safety related duties, and the OICNW for navigational duties.

This is a temporary position lasting approximately 75-90 days. 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in training drills and exercises
  • Perform duties as directed by the Captain and Deck Officers safely and efficiently
  • Assist the Chief Mate with the inspection, testing and maintenance of deck and cargo machinery and systems as well as all firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment onboard
  • Accurately report and record maintenance related activities as requested by an Officer

Qualifications

  • USCG MMC
  • Ordinary Seaman
  • All Required STCW endorsements for an ATB
  • Must have a valid TWIC card and Passport
  • Other certificates and endorsements as deemed required for the operation
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma

Physical Requirements

  • Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds
  • Must have current USCG medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
