Overview

The primary responsibility of the Safety Supervisor will provide leadership and serves as a resource to the General Managers / Operation Managers concerning safety, training, compliance, and occupational health. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop training materials and resources for all safety related training at the operations and ensure training is properly tracked and completed timely

  • Have a strong field presence daily to ensure proper completion and adherence to JHAs, permits, operational procedures, policies, and inspections
  • Attends daily, weekly and monthly meetings with the customer to understand their safety expectations, ensure progress in deficient areas, and ensure a "No Worry" relationship in the safety areas
  • Performs and ensures follow-up on all safety audits findings, either internal or external
  • Teach and help implement the behavior-based safety observation process and routine facility safety inspection process, while helping to set the housekeeping standards
  • Has the ability to teach front-line team members regarding hazard recognition, safe work practices, and risk tolerance
  • Provides and reviews safety-themed materials for all shift safety meetings depending upon the current needs and/or emphasis
  • In the event of an injury, liability, near miss, or derailment, support the operation’s manager with accident investigation and completion of a root cause analysis, to include completion of any required corrective actions
  • Manages inventory of all necessary PPE and maintains safety equipment that requires periodic bump testing and calibration
  • Completes a facility walk-down of all Savage areas of responsibility on a daily basis to ensure proper housekeeping and completion of maintenance tasks
  • Works with and supports front line team members to create and maintain a safety-based culture with a commitment to compliance
  • Utilizes Savage’s internal system to input and track attendance for all required monthly meetings, to include creation of necessary action items. Input JHAs and procedures often
  • Manage the operation’s substance abuse program and health programs to include timely completion of annual physicals and substance testing when necessary
  • Provide timely responses to all customer inquiries in a professional manner
  • Review equipment inspections including the fork lift and bridge crane
  • Work with the customer on any proposed change in procedure, policy, or program
  • Track and input all items required by Savage’s delivery system
  • Ensure refinery services (coke cutting and handling operations) and all rail movements (where applicable) are completed are completed according to procedure

Qualifications

 

  • Maintains a current knowledge of rules, regulations, and compliance issues effecting operations. (OSHA)
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks. Manages time effectively (able to plan, organize and implement around priorities)
  • Possesses an understanding of and commitment to Savage’s delivery system. Demonstrates by example the safety standards and values of Savage. Able to be part of a team working to constantly build the Savage safety culture at the operation
  • Has appropriate experience in rail and equipment safety
  • Communicates effectively both in front of a group and one-on-one, depending upon the audience.
  • Ability to work with and perform computer operations (spreadsheet, word processor, and email operations)
  • SH&E certification preferred (COSS, CHST, CSHM, CSMP, etc.)
  • Exhibits integrity at all times, treats team members right, and is professional at all times

 

Education

  • BS in safety, health, environmental, engineering, or other closely-related field
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience within an industrial setting, preferably within the refining or chemical producing sector
  • Experience with refinery operations, rail safety and bridge crane safety is preferred

 

 Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to climb up and down railcars/ladders safely
  • Willing to receive hazardous material handling training, rail safety training, and general safety training
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Willing to work with liquid and particulate hazardous/non-hazardous materials
  • Can carry at least fifty (50) pounds
  • In good physical condition (able to walk one (1) to two (2) miles per shift)
  • Able to travel on occasion
