Are you looking for a new and exciting career with locomotives?  Savage is seeking a new team member to assist the lead Locomotive Mechanc in locomotive maintenance, ensuring that the rail equipment needs are supported and maintenance work is completed timely, efficiently and safely. This role will also support our equipment in Pasadena, TX, Westlake, La. and Luling, La. The successful candidate should anticipate 50% travel as well as call outs for emergency failures.

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the FRA
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake equipment, electrical equipment, running gear or locomotive components under the guidance of the lead mechanic - company training provided
  • Ability to weld and use a cutting torch to repair or modify locomotive equipment  
  • Ability to perform periodic inspections
  • Ability to interpret oil sample results
  • Conduct daily inspections and locomotive servicing


  • Self‐starter capable of working independently, in line with company goals, strategies and policies
  • Ability to work with other members of the team and to follow instruction for the lead mechanic
  • Willing to learn how to diagnose, problem solve and become familiar with Locomotive maintenance
  • Mechanical aptitude and/or experience
  • Will need to obtain and maintain a CDL license
  • The successful candidate will have a value system that matches up with the culture that we embrace
  • The ability to work under adverse weather conditions and understanding that there is a requirement to be on call for mechanical emergencies on a 24/7 basis 


  • Rail industry experience would be preferable but not necessary
  • Minimum of High School diploma/GED 

Physical Requirements

  • This Mechanic helper will be on his/her feet for extended period of time and walk long distances throughout the day
  • Navigating facilities will include, but is not limited to, exposure to harsh weather conditions, uneven ground, ladders, racks and other high places, ground that can be slick, icy or uneven, and other industrial hazards
  • Potential work sites include industrial rail facilities, remote rail lines, and will require someone who can work safely around this type of environment, as well as ensure compliance to strict OSHA and FRA regulations
  • Ability to lift and maneuver components up to 50 pounds
