  • Overview

    Savage is looking for a General Manager who will oversee industrial rail services for a world-class chemical producer in Louisiana.  Services include in-plant rail switching, SIT Yard Operations, railcar washing and rail logistics support services.  This team member will provide leadership that ensures "Worry Free" service to our customer, a safe work environment and culture for employees, develop relationships with customer, operating units and mainline railroad which interchanges railcars with the Savage operations.  


    • Provide in-plant switching and spotting services for a variety of operation units within the complex
    • Operate a 1600+ car SIT Yard managing in-plant car transfers, inbound & outbound RR shipments
    • Manage a hopper car washing system to support PE loading requirements within the plant
    • Lead and guide the rail portion of the customer's major plant expansion project.  Duties include: 
      • Savage representative for customer's expansion project
      • Responsible for attending project meetings and collaborate with customer
      • Anticipate, develop and implement rail operations plans to work around construction and rail modifications issues to maintain "worry free" operations for the existing site requirements
      • Lead and mentor operation team to own and maintain existing service expectations
      • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with mainline railroads and customer
    • Develop and implement in-plant switching plans and SIT Yard operating plans for the industrial plant complex
    • Experience & ability to operate locomotives and track mobiles via remote control
    • Ensure the customer rail switching services are provided in a safe timely manner
    • Learn and implement the Savage S7 Operations Safety Specialist team
    • Provide leadership and guidance to Operation Safety Specialist team
    • Work with customer to better understand their expectations to ensure a trusted and confident relationship
    • Participate in scheduled meetings with customer logistics and safety teams
    • Daily administrative responsibilities



    • Hands-on experience in railcar switching and wash rack operations
    • Operational leadership experience required (chemical plant/industrial switching required)
    • SIT yard operating experience
    • Wash rack operational experience
    • Loading/unloading racks (chemical and solids)
    • Ability to communicate effectively in front of a group and one-on-one
    • Ability to multitask and maintain professional attitude
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision
    • Familiar with OSHA and FRA standards
    • Able to adapt to changing operation demands: 
      • assess hazards to service expectations
      • revise work
      • communicate status updates
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (excel, word and email)
    • Ability to communicate with co-workers, customers, and other company personnel 
    • Ability to travel periodically as needed 


    • Minimum 5+ years leadership experience in industrial rail operations to include rail switching, wash-rack and loading operations.  Experience with interacting and developing relationships with mainline railroads would be beneficial.  

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to be exposed to the outdoor elements
    • Physical fit to work with the employees in the operation and train them in their jobs and assignments
      • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
      • Operate railcar hand brakes
      • Operate rail switches
      • Walk long distances
      • Consistently bend, stoop, kneel and climb on elevated surfaces
      • Work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
      • Lift up to 50 lbs consistently throughout the course of a shift
      • Operate basic hand tools
      • Wear required PPE
    • Willing to work different shifts and weekends as needed
    • Respond and trouble shoot locomotive and track mobile issue
    • Ability to work/cover weekend duty periodically
