  • Overview

    The Operations Supervisors will have dual responsibilities, being classed as a working Supervisor when required. The primary responsibility of the Operations Supervisor is the direct supervision of team members working in and about the Sydney Rail Centre and associated Sydney Coal Railway (SCR), ensuring a safe work environment, and efficient work practices.  The Operations Supervisor will plan and execute the requirements of the day to day activities of the Savage operations within the Railway aspects of the operation at Sydney Nova Scotia, working in conjunction with the Operations Manager, and customer liaisons.  

    Responsibilities

    • Effective execution of a business plan for the Sydney Coal Railway, and Rail centre as related to the coal distribution and maintenance aspects of the operation
    • Effective understanding, interpretation for the operation’s financial performance
    • Follow and sets goals that are aligned with operation and company initiatives and strategy, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and accountability
    • Hands on, hard-working, self-starter, with aspirations of advancement
    • Leadership and team building abilities
    • Customer requirements understanding and delivery execution in balance with the company and customer’s needs
    • Manage and maintain customer relationships
    • Team members and business associates, treating all with professionalism and care
    • Willingness to properly wear all required Personal Protect Equipment as deem necessary by labour standards and Savage, and enforce strict compliance of same with team members, and visitors
    • Work individually and as a team
    • Ability to multi-task in any or all of these areas
    • Mechanical and technical aptitude
    • General understanding of industrial safety & environmental issues, professionalism & cleanliness
    • Disciplined planning & productivity (effective utilization of people and equipment)
    • Disciplined maintenance of equipment and facilities, effectively utilizing internal and external resources as appropriate
    • Commit to lead the Savage Safety Specialist Program
    • Commit to lead the Savage System
    • Understand, and qualify in required certification for all aspect of the Nova Scotia Railway Act, and the Canada Railway Act
    • Knowledgably in Track Geometry and Maintenance
    • Knowledgeable in Locomotive and Railcar maintenance
    • Knowledgeable in Locomotive and train handling and operation
    • Understand, and qualify in required certification for all aspects of regulatory environmental requirements of the operation
    • Complete all training as identified as mandatory for regulatory compliance, as well as company associated course and training assigned by the Savage.  Training sessions may involve in-house, on line.  Training may be conducted locally or on occasion - out of province offsite training.
    • Perform other tasks as instructed

    Qualifications

    • Previous Operations Supervisor experience with Railway background in materials handling preferred (5+ yrs. leading 10+ people)
    • Engineering degree preferred but not required
    • Basic understanding of material handling facilities and equipment including the associated components and maintenance thereof (conveyors, dust collectors, mobile equipment, locomotives, railcars, track and track geometry, etc.)
    • Above average understanding of Railway equipment from an operating and safety perspective
    • CROR qualified, strongly preferred but not required
    • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
    • Knowledge of computers and related hardware/software
    • Above average spreadsheet and word processing skills
    • Ability to write in English coherently with proper grammar and tone
    • Willing to study and learn new technical skills and techniques
    • Willing to complete all training as identified as mandatory for regulatory compliance, as well as company associated course and training assigned by the Savage.  Training sessions may involve in-house, on line.  Training may be conducted locally or on occasion - out of province offsite training

     

    Education/Experience

    • High School or GED
    • 2-5 years of experience preferred but not required

     

    Physical Requirements

    • Must have the ability to wear full PPE;
    • Must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the safety of his or her own self, or the safety of others
    • Work in an environment containing coal dust, hazardous noise, confined space, and in hot or cold environments
    • Must be willing to work any shift, including weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
    • Must be able to pass a fit test and pulmonary function test for the purposes of wearing a respirator and recertify annually or as needed;
    • Must be able to work outside in all elements;
    • Must be able to walk extended periods of time, walk on uneven ground, bend, stoop, kneel;
    • Must be able to climb ladders and on and off material handling equipment;
