  • Overview

    The Unit Business Manager provides strategic, commercial, operational and financial assistance for the Transload Solutions Unit. This role will support all of the operations in the Transload Solutions Unit. The Unit is in a transformational period moving from fixed contract operations to proprietary, controlled terminals. The Business Manager will be critical in this transition; providing thought leadership and initiative to make the Savage Transload Network one of the largest rail and terminaling networks in the country. 


    • Lead the functional support for new operation startups and integrations
    • Collaborate with other Business Managers and Directors in the Unit
    • Lead Unit reporting consolidation for the Business Unit and ensure financial reporting accuracy and timeliness (Daily Financial reports, Key Performance Indicator reports, monthly Projections and Variance Analysis, etc.)
    • Lead the Customer Service Team to support the operations and improve customer service
    • Lead Unit efforts to develop business plans and operating budgets
    • Support the Unit Leader in major decisions concerning the deployment of capital and other resources
    • Provide advice and input into Unit organizational matters
    • Provide analysis and support to assist operations in identifying and implementing solutions to operating and financial problems
    • Proactively identify opportunities for improved performance and efficiencies
    • Assist in developing and maintaining relationships with customers that ensure clear and direct communications and high levels of trust
    • Analyze the effects of operational changes and provide support for operational decisions concerning equipment purchases, employee wages, staffing plans, etc.
    • Develop an understanding of all commercial contracts pertaining to the Unit; Work with the Unit and Operations Leaders to ensure compliance with contractual obligations by Customers and the Company
    • Monitor contractual rate adjustments to ensure implementation and accuracy
    • Support the Unit’s development efforts in the structuring, pricing and operations planning of new business opportunities
    • Develop an understanding of local business conditions and the impact they have on the Unit
    • Become an industry insider with respect to the customers and markets we serve
    • Provide Unit support to implement and execute the Savage S7 Operating System
    • Work with the management team to ensure financial tools are properly utilized within the Unit
    • Ensure Managers receive proper training on internal Controls and accounting processes and systems
    • Other tasks and duties as assigned

    • Exceptional understanding of accounting controls and practices; proficiency with financial analysis tools; a solid understanding of financial and accounting principles and statements (profit and loss, budgeting, balance sheet, statement of cash flow, etc.
    • Strong understanding of Savage financial systems (DOBI, OBI, Hyperion, etc)


    • MBA or solid educational background in business management, operations, accounting or finance
    • Three (3+) years of business experience, including operations or finance
    • Preferred: 2+ years of experience as a Unit Business Manager with Savage Industry knowledge helpful but not necessary (i.e. marine, supply chain management bulk material and/or liquid handling, transportation, logistics, refineries)
    • Will require approximately 30% to 40% travel to operating locations, with 70% travel during the business planning process
    • Willingness to relocate a is strongly preferred
