  • Overview

    The Carman Position will rebuild and service Railroad freight cars in accordance with FRA regulations, AAR rules and company polices.  This is accomplished through the use of hand tools, power tools, cutting torches and welding equipment.  Work is of a physical nature and requires kneeling, bending and or standing, walking long distances over uneven terrain, Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct Inspection
    • Perform scheduled or on demand maintenance of rolling stock
    • Ability to follow operating procedures and policies
    • Ability to perform work safely and productively
    • Ability and interested in being cross trained on all functions at facility
    • Strong work ethic
    • Willingness to follow procedures
    • Keeps work area clean
    • Is not afraid to ask questions
    • Can accurately fill out all necessary paperwork
    • Enforces safety policies and procedures with other employees and visitors
    • Ability to perform general maintenance on equipment
    • Assist with handyman duties within the facility general maintenance
    • Interact with other team members
    • Interact with customers, railroad crews, and visitors
    • Understands customer needs

    Qualifications

    • Read, write, and understand English
    • Welding, oxygen torch operation
    • Fork lift operation
    • Basic math skills
    • Computer skills (light data entry)
    • Valid Class A CDL (or willingness to obtain Class A)
    • Capable to learn how to operate and maintain shop machinery, tools, vehicles, and equipment
    • Must be able and willing to understand safety rules
    • Practice safe work habits
    • Identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
    • Ability and willingness to travel
    • Must have some flexibility with regard to schedule

     

    Education/Experience:

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
    • Previous railcar repair experience required

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Physically able to climb up and down railcars/ladders safely
    • Willing to receive general safety training
    • Ability to work outside in ALL weather conditions (snow, rain, sub-freezing temps)
    • Can carry at least fifty (50) pounds
    • In good physical condition and willing to walk long distances
